X banned, Bluesky takes off! 1 million users…

Bluesky gained 1 million users after Brazil banned X. The platform is officially inaccessible in the country.

Brazil decided to ban the X (or Twitter) app last week. Bluesky, developed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, quickly gained great interest. After the X ban, it gained more than 1 million new users.

Brazil decided to completely suspend X's operations in the country at the end of August. The ban occurred especially after the platform reactivated accounts supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The fact that X is no longer accessible in Brazil has led users to alternative social media apps. Launched earlier this year, Bluesky made a big splash against the monopolization of platforms like Twitter. The ban in Brazil has helped the app regain its popularity.

Bluesky's blue and white design reflects the X interface. While it is still much smaller than giants like Threads and X, it has doubled its user base in the past month. Accordingly, it is estimated to have reached more than 7.79 million users worldwide.

A Bluesky spokesperson said that they are excited to welcome users who are looking for alternative options after the events in Brazil. The platform said that it will continue to be open, transparent and people-centered, in line with its founding principles.

It is not yet clear whether Bluesky can maintain its momentum or whether users will return to larger platforms like X. But for now, X has benefited from its ban in Brazil.
